Odisha CM Launches Reprinted Edition of Iconic Odia Primer ‘Barnabodha’

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi officially unveiled the reprinted edition of the iconic Odia primer, Barnabodha, during a special event held in the capital city. The launch coincided with the birth anniversary of its esteemed author, Bhaktakabi Madhusudan Rao, a celebrated figure in Odia literature.

In addition to the reprinted version, the Chief Minister also introduced a digital edition of Barnabodha, ensuring its accessibility to a wider audience in the digital era. Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the significance of the book in shaping Odia linguistic heritage and education.

“Bhaktakabi Madhusudan Rao was born on the auspicious day of Saraswati Puja in 1853. As a tribute to his immense contribution to Odia language and literature, we have reintroduced Barnabodha on this sacred occasion,” said CM Majhi.

First published in 1895, Barnabodha has played a pivotal role in Odia education. Between 1895 and 1901, at least eight editions of the book were released, demonstrating its widespread acceptance. Officially recognized and recommended by the Education Department, the primer gained massive popularity, with over one lakh copies sold between 1947 and 1948.

Commonly referred to as Chhabila Madhu Barnabodha, this primer is considered the foundation for learning the Odia language. It is often said that every Odia-speaking individual has, at some point, studied Barnabodha, underscoring its deep-rooted presence in the cultural and educational landscape of Odisha.

“The Odia language boasts a rich literary heritage and a glorious past. Bhaktakabi Madhusudan Rao meticulously compiled Barnabodha to make learning Odia simple and accessible. This book has been an integral part of every Odia household for generations. While reprinting it, we have ensured that its authenticity and originality remain untouched,” the Chief Minister affirmed.

The launch event witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and MLA Babu Singh, who expressed their appreciation for the initiative aimed at preserving and promoting Odisha’s linguistic legacy.
